Q5What is the bone remodelling process?

A5 Bone is not static; it is a living tissue. It is continually being remodelled and rebuilt so that old or damaged bone is dissolved and replaced with newly regenerated bone.  Cells called 'osteoclasts' remove the old worn or damaged part of the bone structure, leaving a cavity. Another group of cells, called 'osteoblasts', then fill this cavity with healthy new bone.  It's a two-step process. First, the osteoblasts lay down a protein matrix structure. This provides the scaffolding of the bone and allows for a certain amount of flexibility.

Second, minerals such as calcium, magnesium, phosphorus and zinc are deposited into this protein matrix. This gives the bone the strength and rigidity it requires.  'Teams' of osteoclasts and osteoblasts are constantly moving along our bones dissolving and then regenerating them. This 'bone remodelling' is happening in millions of places throughout the body at any one time. It is our body's way of keeping bones strong and healthy while repairing the normal 'wear and tear'.

Q6When do I reach my peak bone mass?A6 Ninety percent of your bone mass forms before you are 20 years old. Up until the age of about 25, bone still gradually increases in mass and density, as calcium and other minerals are deposited.  Once you reach your peak bone mass is achieved (approx age 25) bone breakdown can begin to outweigh bone formation resulting in a gradual decline in bone mass.
Q7When do my bones begin to break down?A7 Bone breakdown may occur after 25 years of age, once you have reached Peak Bone Mass.  Bone breakdown begins when the osteoclasts dissolve the old bone faster than the osteoblasts can keep up with the ‘replacement’. As this continues, the honeycomb-like structure becomes thinner, more brittle and disconnected. Over time, the entire structure of the bone starts to erode. This can cause the bone to lose its density and strength and become prone to breaking.  We need to provide our bodies with the right balance of exercise, bone nutrition and hormone levels to help achieve optimal bone maintenance and reduce the rate of bone breakdown.

Q8What are the essential bone nutrients?

A8 Bone nutrients are needed every day to help you achieve optimal bone maintenance These essential nutrients include protein, calcium, vitamin D, magnesium and zinc. Together, they help maintain bones. Anlene provides all these nutrients in the right amounts to help adults achieve optimal bone maintenance.
Q9 What is the Anlene Bone Formula for optimal bone maintenance?

Q13Can you have too much Anlene?

A13 Anlene contains at least 100% of the RDI of calcium and vitamin D and 50% of the RDI of magnesium and zinc in 2 serves a day. It is recommended that you consume 2 serves a day to help maintain your bones. The levels of nutrients provided in Anlene have been set at safe levels and in accordance with guidelines set out by the Australian and New Zealand Food Standards Code.
Q14Can children use Anlene?A14 Anlene is specially formulated to supplement the nutritional needs of adults, especially those lacking in essential bone nutrients and energy. Q16Can I give Anlene to toddlers (over the age of 2)?

A16 Anlene is specially formulated to supplement the nutritional needs of adults, especially those who may be lacking essential bone nutrients and energy. As such it is fortified to high levels of essential bone nutrients which can exceed those required by children.  Children should only consume Anlene in moderation.
Q17 Is Anlene ok for teenagers? (13-18 years)A17 Yes. Anlene is suitable for teenagers. Nutrient needs are greatest during adolescence (except for during pregnancy and lactation) than at any other time in life. Two serves of Anlene daily helps to provide growing teenagers with the nutrients they need as part of a balanced diet.
Q18 Is Anlene OK for pregnant and breast feeding women?A18 During pregnancy and breastfeeding, a woman's body requires higher amounts of some bone nutrients to provide the needs of the growing foetus and baby. If these extra requirements are not met by the mother’s diet, they will be taken from her body's stores.  Anlene is a good way of boosting your bone nutrient intake when you are pregnant or breastfeeding. If you have specific concerns, please contact your health care professional.

Q19 Is Anlene OK for Diabetics?

A19 Yes. Milk and milk drinks are a nutritious food that should make up part of our healthy balance diet. However diabetes patients are advised to consume Anlene in smaller quantities with or after meal. This is because when milk or milk drinks are being ingested with other solid food, the stomach can take a longer time to digest and break down lactose (sugar found naturally in dairy) into glucose. This results in blood glucose levels not rising to sharply.

If you have any specific concerns, please contact your haltcare professional.

Q20What else can I do to help keep my bones strong?

A20 The body needs the right balance of exercise and nutrition to help maintain bones. Eating a healthy diet including plenty of fruit and vegetables, low fat dairy products and lean meat will help to ensure that you are optimising your bone nutrition. Do regular weight bearing exercise (like brisk walking, jogging, gardening or take the stairs instead of the lift).  Only drink alcohol in moderation and avoid smoking.

If you have specific concerns about your bone health, please contact your health care professional.

Q21Isn't it too late to change my bone health now that I am over 30?A21 It is NEVER too late to help maintain bone strength.  Most people do reach their peak bone mass around the age of 25, during later adult years it is important to take steps to maintain your bone strength.  Bones are living tissue and they are continually rebuilding.  You need the right balance of weight bearing exercise, nutrition and a healthy lifestyle.  Adding Anlene to your diet is an easy way to boost your bone nutrient intake.  (Note:  You will never be able to achieve higher bone mass than the level you had at your 'peak bone mass', around the age of 25, however you can help maintain your bone strength and reduce the rate of bone breakdown).
